Direct answer: A Vietnam eVisa is not normally extendable. However, when a foreign visitor is suddenly hospitalized, requires continued medical treatment, and is medically unable to travel, the case may be reviewed by the Vietnamese immigration authority on an individual basis. Approval is not automatic and depends heavily on the medical evidence, temporary residence registration, timing, and the complete supporting file.
Important: Do not wait until the eVisa has already expired. Start preparing the file as soon as the hospital confirms that the patient needs extended treatment or cannot safely travel.
Real case: a German eVisa holder hospitalized before his visa expired
One of our German clients regularly stayed in Vietnam using a 90-day eVisa. At the end of each permitted stay, he normally completed a Moc Bai visa run from Ho Chi Minh City and returned with a new valid eVisa.
Before his most recent eVisa expired, he unexpectedly became ill and had to be admitted to hospital for longer-term treatment. Because his medical condition made a border run and international travel unsafe, the normal exit-and-re-enter plan was no longer realistic.
This is the type of exceptional situation in which the immigration authority may consider a temporary-stay solution based on the actual circumstances. It should not be described as a guaranteed “eVisa extension service.” It is a case-by-case immigration application supported by medical and residence documents.
Can illness automatically extend a Vietnam eVisa?
No. Hospitalization does not automatically extend an eVisa, and a hospital letter alone does not create a legal right to remain beyond the permitted stay.
The immigration officer must assess the complete file under Vietnam’s immigration rules. The documents should clearly establish:
- the patient is genuinely receiving medical treatment;
- continued treatment is medically necessary;
- the patient is currently unable or medically unfit to travel;
- the foreign visitor has been properly registered at the place of temporary residence; and
- the application was submitted before the current permitted stay expired.
Submitting random documents and asking the officer to make an exception is rarely effective. The supporting papers must give the authority a clear factual and legal basis to consider the case.
Documents normally prepared for a medical-treatment case
The exact requirements may differ depending on the applicant’s nationality, medical condition, hospital, current immigration status, sponsor, and local immigration office. A typical file may include the following:
1. Original passport and Vietnam eVisa
Prepare the original passport and a clear printed or digital copy of the current eVisa. Check the eVisa expiry date carefully. You can review our complete Vietnam eVisa guide for the basic validity and entry rules.
2. Form NA5
Form NA5 is commonly used for applications involving visa or temporary-stay matters for foreigners in Vietnam. It must be completed accurately and signed by the relevant applicant, inviting party, guarantor, or responsible organization as required for the specific case.
3. Embassy or consular note
Depending on the case, the immigration authority may request or consider a diplomatic note or supporting letter from the applicant’s embassy or consulate. Contact the embassy early because issuance procedures and processing times vary.
4. Hospital confirmation and medical records
The hospital letter is one of the most important documents. It should not merely state that the foreign visitor attended the hospital. Ask the hospital to clearly confirm, where medically accurate, that:
- the patient has been admitted or is receiving ongoing treatment;
- continued treatment is required for a stated or estimated period;
- the patient is not currently fit to travel, cannot safely move, or should not undertake a border journey; and
- the hospital can be contacted to verify the information.
Discharge papers, appointment schedules, medical reports, invoices, and the treating doctor’s confirmation may also help demonstrate that the situation is genuine.
5. Online temporary residence confirmation
The accommodation owner, landlord, hotel, or host should have registered the foreign guest’s temporary residence online. Ask the host for the electronic confirmation file or a clear record of the registration.
This step is often overlooked. When a foreign guest has not been properly registered, the immigration authority may refuse to receive or process the file until the residence issue is addressed. The host and foreign guest may also face administrative complications or penalties.
Whenever you enter or re-enter Vietnam, request confirmation that your hotel or landlord has completed the online temporary residence registration. Do not wait until an emergency occurs.
When should the application be submitted?
Prepare the file immediately after the medical situation becomes clear. In practice, the application should ideally be submitted while the eVisa is still valid. A common working window is approximately one to three days before expiry, but waiting until the last one or two days is risky if documents are missing or the hospital and embassy need more time.
Early preparation is particularly important when the expiry date falls near a weekend or public holiday. See our guide on what happens when a Vietnam eVisa is still pending close to the travel date for related timing risks.
What happens if the medical request is not accepted?
The immigration authority may ask for additional evidence, require another immigration solution, issue a short period for arranging departure, or decline the requested stay. The result depends on the facts of the case.
If the patient later becomes medically fit to travel, the alternatives may include leaving Vietnam and applying for a new eVisa. Before planning a border trip, read our guide to exiting and re-entering Vietnam with an eVisa.
Practical checklist
- Check the exact eVisa expiry date.
- Notify the hospital that an immigration-support letter is needed.
- Ask the doctor to state the need for continued treatment and inability to travel, when medically correct.
- Obtain the online temporary residence confirmation from the landlord, host, or hotel.
- Contact the relevant embassy or consulate regarding a supporting note.
- Prepare the passport, eVisa, NA5 form, medical papers, and residence record.
- Submit the file before the permitted stay expires.
- Keep copies of everything submitted.
Frequently asked questions
Can every hospitalized foreigner extend a Vietnam eVisa?
No. Every file is reviewed individually. Hospitalization is supporting evidence, not an automatic approval.
Is a hospital invoice enough?
Usually not. A detailed medical confirmation explaining the treatment period and why the patient cannot travel is much more useful than an invoice alone.
Can I apply after the eVisa has expired?
An expired stay creates additional immigration and overstay issues. Contact immigration support immediately rather than assuming the medical documents will remove the overstay consequences.
Is temporary residence registration really necessary?
Yes. Proper online temporary residence registration is an important part of immigration compliance and may be required before the application is accepted.
Does GOREISE guarantee approval?
No responsible provider can guarantee the decision. GOREISE can review the circumstances, check the available documents, identify missing items, and help prepare the file for submission. The final decision belongs to the competent Vietnamese immigration authority.
